Hardworking, Competitive, Enterprising: Edgar.

By Raoul “Junior” Dolcine

“There is no point in doing something if you are not going to be the best at it.”

The self-proclaimed “Renaissance Man” Edgar Walker, 17, lives by this motto in every aspect of his life.

“Being the best means that you know you did the best that you could and you achieved your goals,” Edgar said.

Edgar embodies this attitude as an athlete. He will start his third season on the Kenwood High varsity baseball team in the spring. It will also be the second year that he is the captain of the team. In Edgar’s mind, he is the best athlete because he has worked hard and achieved his goals.

“My goal is to play as well as I can while on the diamond,” Edgar said. “If I do that, then I am the best player on the team.”

Even when not playing sports, Edgar’s competitive spirit drives him to be the best. As a basketball scout for MDHigh.rivals.com, he faces competition to find the most talented rising stars.  Edgar feels a sense of pride as a young writer in a competitive field.

“I am proud that I got hired to MD High,” Edgar said. “It is a big deal because when I write, I actually have a voice that the Maryland high school basketball scouting people will listen to.”

Edgar is also an analyst on multiple websites serving both Baltimore and greater Maryland areas. This includes Marylandhoops.net, which he created in May. It is often difficult to be the first to break a story. However, Edgar does not let this destroy his competitive drive.

“When a rival breaks a story before me I don’t dwell on it,” Edgar said. “I try harder to beat them the next time. I’d like to think I do.”

Edgar maintains his ambitious attitude even when he is outside the realm of sports. When with his friends, he finds the need to the best.

“I am the kind of person that does things first,” Edgar said. “I am the person who stops talking about doing something and actually does it.”

Personal recognition is not as important to Edgar as being the best. However, he admits that being the best deserves its share of recognition.

“If you know you are doing something the best way possible, recognition should come by default,” Edgar said.

In the future, Edgar expects to continue finding ways to become better, to accomplish goals and to beat his rivals. In these ways, he believes he will be successful.

“Being the best is being successful,” Edgar said. “If your are not trying to beat someone, something or some goal then what are you accomplishing?”
